Like a router, a hub adds more ethernet ports to your network, but unlike a router, it does not direct where the data goes. You can use a hub or switch in addition to a router to connect more devices, e.g. if you have an Airport Extreme router with only one extra (LAN) ethernet port and three Mac Pros you need to connect with ethernet, you can add additional ports by plugging the router and computers into a switch.
