I’ve plugged in all the cables from my external widget to my Mac and it still doesn’t work.

So you've plugged in all the cables that came with your external hard drive, printer, or other device, and it still doesn't worK? You may have actually plugged in too many cables. Most external hard drives, printers, and other widgets only need one cable to connect to your Mac. Even if your device comes with a FireWire cable and USB cable, you should only plug in one or the other, not both. Check your external device’s manual for how to plug in and set-up your device properly.
