My mouse or keyboard stopped working.

It may seem like your Mac froze, but quite often it’s the mouse or keyboard that stopped responding. Try unplugging and replugging the mouse. If your mouse is plugged into a keyboard, monitor, or hub, turn off the computer. Plug only the mouse into the USB port on the computer (rather than into the keyboard, monitor, or hub) and then restart. If this works, your computer itself is okay, but there is probably a bad USB connection in your keyboard, monitor, or hub.

If you have a wireless mouse or keyboard, you may need to recharge or replace their batteries. If you use Bluetooth to connect your mouse or keyboard wirelessly, check that you have Bluetooth turned on in your System Preferences (in the Bluetooth Panel). You can also try to re-connect to your mouse or keyboard using the Bluetooth pop-up menu in the upper-right corner of your screen (by the volume control).

NOTE

It is fine to plug in USB and FireWire devices when the computer is on. However, storage devices such as flash disks or hard drives should always be dismounted (drag the icon to the trash, which will turn into an eject icon) before you disconnect them.
